ASDA's 5th Annual Steel City Dental Expo
October 25th, 2012

Pitt ASDA’s 5th Annual Steel City Expo was held on October 25th, 2012. Students, residents, faculty, and local professionals were invited to attend an educational seminar, followed by a vendor fair featuring over 30 tables. The new venue location of the Schenley Ballroom at the Holiday Inn of North Oakland was well received and allowed for a fun, educational experience outside of Salk Hall. This year’s seminar focused on "The Modern Restorative Practice," presented by Dr. Michael DiTolla, DDS, FAGD. Dr. Ditolla discussed how dentists with average hands can develop techniques that provide exceptional restorative results through improved preps, impressions, and restorations using the newest technologies available.

2012 Summer Picnic
June 7th, 2012

Pitt ASDA's 2012 Summer Picnic was held on June 7th at the Veteran's Pavilion in Schenley Park. The festivities began with delicious food served up on the new grill which was generously funded for with help from several members of the Pitt SDM faculty. The annual water balloon toss gathered a crowd as kids were taking shots at the piñata. The main event of the night was the first annual Dental School Sing Off in which five members of each class braved it all in front of their fellow classmates with a karaoke competition judged by Pitt SDM professors. Rising third years took the crown as we celebrated the arrival of the new class and sendoff for recent graduates. Good luck to the new Pitt Alumni, and see all you first years in August!

6th Annual Pitt ASDA Golf Outing
May 12, 2012

Pitt ASDA's 6th Annual Charity Golf Outing, to benefit First Tee of Pittsburgh, was played on a beautiful Saturday at the Links at Spring Church. Teams of students, faculty, and staff came together to raise money and awareness for a great cause, as well as to attempt to earn bragging rights for the next year. This year's champions were: Inkyu Ahn, Matt Castele, James Crawford, and Ajay Malhotra.

Pennsylvania Dental Association Annual Session
April 27-28, 2012

Daniel Novak and Scott Santoro, Pitt ASDA Treasurer and Web Designer, were invited to Hershey, PA this year to serve as student delegates from Pitt to the Pennsylvania Dental Association Annual Session. It was a very unique opportunity to see firsthand the inner workings of the PDA. We had the pleasure of being addressed by Dr. William Calnon, the current President of the ADA, as well as Dr. Dennis Charlton, the now immediate past President of the PDA. Dr. Bernard Dishler was officially moved into the PDA President position, and Pitt’s very own Dr. R. Donald Hoffman moved into the President-elect position. The delegates voted on important issues including the incorporation of policy supporting taxation on smokeless tobacco in the state of Pennsylvania, the only state in the U.S. to not already do so. The Annual Session is also an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of members, with Dr. Thomas Braun, Dean of Pitt Dental, receiving the PDA Recognition Award for the advancement of special needs dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Thank you to the PDA for allowing us to partake in such a great experience!

Pitt ASDA Welcomes Congressman Tim Murphy
January 10, 2012

On January 10, 2012, Dean Braun and Pitt ASDA welcomed US Congressman Tim Murphy to the School of Dental Medicine for a lunch seminar. Congressman Murphy is serving his fifth term in the US Congress representing the 18th District of Pennsylvania, which includes the South Hills of Pittsburgh and parts of Washington and Westmoreland counties. A leading advocate for healthcare reform, he presented several current hot topics from "The Hill" and answered student questions regarding potential changes to healthcare related legislature. Students, residents, faculty, and local professionals were invited to attend an educational seminar, followed by a vendor fair featuring 36 tables. This year’s seminar focused on the keys to success in private practice, presented by Dr. Steven Johnson of Johnson Family Dental based in Santa Barbara, California. Pitt ASDA Fall Picnic

Pitt ASDA's 2011 Fall Picnic was held on September 9th at the Veteran's Pavilion in Schenley Park. As always it was a great way to kick off the school year, with lots of food, drinks, and fun for all. The renowned water balloon toss and the infamous pie eating contest made for a great event to welcome the Class of 2015.

Lunch Seminar: Coulter, Peterson, Binstock & Associates
September 8th 2011

During this lunch seminar, representatives from Coulter, Peterson, Binstock, & Associates presented a very educational lecture regarding financial management. Third and fourth year students were in attendance and took the opportunity to ask many questions regarding the best way to manage the business aspect of dentistry.

Pitt Recognized at 41st National ASDA Annual Session
March 3-6 2011

Pitt ASDA traveled to Anaheim, CA for the 41st ASDA Annual Session. The purpose of this annual meeting is to bring together ASDA representatives from each of the 58 accredited dental schools to elect new leadership, adopt resolutions, and award local chapters and individuals for their work throughout the year.

Pitt ASDA was awarded for best Involvement with Organized Dentistry and Involvement with Predental Membership!

Pitt ASDA Predental Conference
February 24-26 2011

Pitt ASDA hosted a 3 day conference for Predental students from all over the state, offering educational seminars and hands-on labs to give these prospective students an idea of what to expect in dental school. NERB Hospitality Suite
Friday February 18th 2011

To help provide support to 4th year students participating in the North Eastern Regional Boards, ASDA members set up a hospitality suite for patient volunteers and worked hard to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Thank you to all the ASDA members who volunteered their time and energy to making the testing experience less stressful for all parties involved.
